Sustainability continues to influence the development of pressure-sensitive label materials, with adhesive technology becoming an increasingly important part of recyclable and reusable packaging design.
One of the latest developments is the introduction of WA-669 Wash-Away Adhesive, a new pressure-sensitive adhesive technology developed for reusable and returnable glass packaging. The technology is scheduled to make its public debut at LOUPE Americas 2026 in Chicago this September.
Traditional pressure-sensitive labels are designed primarily to remain securely attached throughout the life of a product. Reusable packaging, however, creates a different technical challenge: the label must perform like a permanent label during transportation, storage and use, while still being removable during the container cleaning process.
The new wash-away adhesive is designed specifically for glass and other non-porous surfaces. It provides reliable adhesion under normal conditions, including exposure to water and ice-bucket environments, while allowing the label and adhesive to be removed during hot-water or caustic washing.
This combination of secure adhesion and controlled removability is particularly relevant to wine, spirits and beverage applications, where both presentation and moisture resistance are important.
The development is not limited to adhesive performance.
Initial label constructions using the new technology combine wet-strength paper facestocks with a 1.2 mil liner containing 90% recycled PET (r-PET). The adhesive can also be combined with other facestock and liner structures for different labeling applications.
This reflects a broader change taking place in the self-adhesive label industry. Sustainability is increasingly being considered across the entire label construction:

Rather than evaluating each component independently, material manufacturers are developing complete constructions that can better support the end-of-life requirements of the final package.
For self-adhesive material manufacturers and label converters, this trend could create new requirements for adhesive development.
Performance parameters such as initial tack, peel adhesion, water resistance and low-temperature performance will remain important. At the same time, properties such as washability, clean separation and compatibility with recycling or reuse systems are likely to receive greater attention.
This is especially relevant for applications involving glass bottles, PET containers and other reusable or recyclable packaging, where conventional permanent adhesives can sometimes complicate washing and material recovery.
The launch comes as the label industry prepares for LOUPE Americas 2026, taking place in Chicago from September 15–17. Sustainability, linerless technology, advanced pressure-sensitive adhesives and new film constructions are among the technologies receiving attention around this year’s event.
For the self-adhesive materials industry, wash-away adhesive technology demonstrates how the role of a label is changing. Future labelstock will increasingly need to deliver not only reliable converting and application performance, but also better compatibility with the complete packaging lifecycle.
As reusable and recyclable packaging systems continue to develop, the combination of high-performance facestocks, specialized pressure-sensitive adhesives and more sustainable release liners is expected to become an important area of innovation for the global label industry.
